As the first week of December comes to an end, I wanted to highlight another Christmas book this week. This particular one comes from the genre of the classics, which are some of my very favorite books. Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol is a Christmas tradition that must be read every December, and there are so many film adaptations out there too--some good and some not so great. Probably one of my favorites will always be A Muppet Christmas Carol that came out when I was a little girl. This particular rendition adds a bit of humor to the story. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.
Grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first line!

Today I am going to post a line from:
A Christmas Carol
by Charles Dickens
And the first line is...
Stave 1
Marley's Ghost
"Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge's name was good upon 'Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail."
Happy reading and happy Friday!

DeleteI know the A Christmas Carol story and have seen a couple of TV and movie versions, but I don't think I've ever read it. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'm sharing from The House on Foster Hill by Jamie Jo Wright on my blog, but had to put it down because nighttime and suspense and a need to sleep. So I'm currently reading something a little lighter: Holding the Fort by Regina Jennings. Here's the first line:
The fumes of the gaslights at the foot of the stage protected Louisa Bell from the more noxious odors of her audience.
Just the kind of lighthearted read I enjoy! The weather forecast for the weekend is looking bright and sunny, so I'm planning to get back into The House on Foster Hill when the sun comes out :)
You're welcome! I understand the struggle about needing to read something lighter--I love reading mysteries too. :) Happy Saturday Iola!
Deleteisn't that such a great first line? "Marley was dead: to begin with." My current first line is from Julie Lessman's For Love of Liberty - "Abominable." :)
ReplyDeleteIt is--and your first line is brilliant too! Happy Saturday Carrie!
DeleteAh, a classic! I'm actually heading to a Dickens of a Christmas later today. It's a street fair with people dressed up in costume with dancing, music, singing, and more. Should be fun.

ReplyDelete"The little hairs on the back of Allegra Spencer's neck stood at attention. He was behind her."
Oh my--great first line! Happy Thursday Nicole!
DeleteI love the movie, but never read that book. What a great first line! By the way, did you see The Man Who Invented Christmas at the theater? So good! I'll share the first line from a nonfiction book I'm currently reading. Pastoral Letters by Robert Murray McCheyne. "To all of you, my dear friends, and people who are beloved of God and faithful in Christ Jesus, your pastor wishes grace and peace from God the Father, and Jesus Christ our Lord." Sounds like the beginning of an epistle in the Bible, doesn't it? He was an amazing man of God who accomplished much in the short span of life given to him.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen that film yet, but it is definitely a movie I want to see. :) Happy Thursday Anneliese!
